94 eclipse jerks and cuts out but doesnt die?

hello, my 94 eclipse 1.8L (manual trans.) is jerking violently and cutting out, but doesnt die. I cant drive it far though naturally and really need the car. I changed fuel filter, plugs, wires, from this forum i was told how to check the fuel pressure regulator and no fuel came out or was damp. a mechanic put on a remanufactured distributor and it ran for a few days then back to the same thing.....dont know if it is relevant but the dash lights dimmed then went out and still havnt come back on yet so i cant tell rpms or speed at night.i also changed pcv valve. I can hear the fuel pump engage a few seconds so i dont think it is that....i have been told on here that the ecu or the throttle position sensor might be it too. can someone please help by pointing me in the right direction? i just bought the car and after that and the little tune up parts and distributor i am about broke. just cant afford to throw parts at it.. thanks in advance94 eclipse jerks and cuts out but doesnt die?
It sounds like a diode is open in or alternater like when your drive it it starts bunny hoppin like when you first learn to drive a stick. When the diode is open it puts out a DC current instead of the AC that your car needs what i would do is take it by advance or autozone and have them check the alternator my talon was doing the same thing and that fixed the problem.94 eclipse jerks and cuts out but doesnt die?
If the capacitors in your ECU are leaking, you can save $200 and repair it at home if you have a soldering iron and some electronics skills. Most commonly, corrosion on the board from the capacitor fluid is the cause, as even leaky capacitors usually still work. Usually you need to use an ohmmeter to see the problem, as the break in the trace is often incredibly small.

That guy is very honest, and really knows his way around a Mitsubishi.
